Giancarlo Castro D’Addona
Portland Youth Wind Ensemble Conductor
An award-winning composer, conductor, and trumpet player, Castro D’Addona is recognized as one of the most outstanding artists to have emerged from Venezuela’s acclaimed “El Sistema” music education program. His compositions have been performed around the world in scenarios such as Carnegie Hall in New York, Disney Concert Hall in L.A, Radio France Theater in Paris, the Royal Albert Hall in London, Berlin Konzerthaus in Berlin, Vienna Concertgebouw in Vienna among others, performed by groups and soloists as Laurentius Dinca (Violinist of Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra), Carol Jantsch (Principal Tuba of the Philadelphia Orchestra), and the U.S. Marine Band “The President’s Own” which performed one of his pieces in the U.S. Capitol in Washington D.C. Some of his works have been recorded under the EMI Classics, Genuin, and Euroarts labels and also have been recognized as “Best Seller” in Europe becoming mandatory works in international Wind Band and Soloist Competitions.
As a conductor, he has participated with many orchestras and chamber music groups such as: Simon Bolivar Orchestra (Venezuela), Paris Symphonic Orchestra (France), Valentiana Orchestra (France), the Walking Jazz Band of Manizales (Colombia), performing his music and the extensive symphonic, jazz and latin american repertoire in many different countries. Currently, he serves as the conductor of Reed College Orchestra, Encore Brass, the Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, and Sinfonietta Orchestra (MYS). Recently, he has served as Cover Conductor at Oregon Symphony Orchestra and he has finished works commissioned by Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (YOLA) and The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association performed in the Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
