Honoring Juneteenth Through Music: William Grant Still’s Vision of a New America

June 19 marks Juneteenth, the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the ending of slavery in the United States. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued in 1863, freedom did not reach enslaved African Americans in Texas until June 19, 1865—over two years later.
