FULL CIRCLE
by Kate Davis (PYCO 2003-2005, PYP 2005-2009)
I’m a singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist currently based in Brooklyn, NY. I grew up in Oregon and spent my formative years playing violin and bass
in PYCO and PYP. It was an experience that deeply impacted my relationship with music, community, and my aesthetics— having been exposed to so many incredible orchestral works during such an influential time. I left Oregon in 2009 to attend the Manhattan School of Music, and since then have been working professionally as a musician within multiple genres. Despite the momentum and opportunity that NYC provides, I very often think back on my time in youth orchestra. In some ways, it was the first moment where I felt a sense of belonging. My peers shared my niche interests and we all felt we were a part of something far bigger than our individual selves.
I was thrilled to compose a piece for this year’s Youth Orchestra Commissioning Initiative (YOCI). There was a full circle feeling, coming back to a very positive and significant moment in my life, but also a sense of pride. PYP is aware of the need for inclusion and representation. At this moment it is crucial that we set a new standard for classical music by making way for new voices. PYP will always be a big part of my story. Now, more than ever, it lives in my heart.
Don’t forget to register for free (or “pay what you can”) to watch PYPFEST from home in November!
