Celebrate PYP’s Season 101 Finale – and Catch a Sneak Peek!

Portland Youth Philharmonic’s unforgettable 101st season is coming to a close — and we invite you to join us for our grand finale concert, The Search for Beauty, on Saturday, May 4, 2025, at 4:00 PM at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.
This dynamic season-ending program features Hansen Berrett, winner of the 2023 PPI Concerto Competition, performing Shostakovich’s vibrant and deeply personal Piano Concerto No. 2. Written for the composer’s son, this work captures joy, eccentricity, and tenderness all at once — and Hansen’s performance promises to be one of the highlights of the evening.
The concert also includes works by Robert Schumann, Valerie Coleman, and Ruth Gipps, each offering their own perspective on beauty, resilience, and hope through music. To close the program with a special nod to Star Wars Day, PYP will perform John Williams’ beloved Yoda’s Theme — a fitting way to end a season filled with exploration and discovery.

Our PYP String Quintet was featured alongside pianist Hansen Berrett, performing music by Shostakovich. It’s a fantastic way to experience a sample of Hansen’s artistry and the energy our young musicians are bringing to the stage this season.
The episode also includes performances by Zach Galatis and Alicia Paulsen of 45th Parallel Universe, with pianist María García, performing works by Japanese composer Yuko Uebayashi.
