PYP musicians launch nonprofit Music4Harmony!

Posted on July 27, 2023

PYP musicians Katie Liu, Claire Youn, Ellie Liu, and Hailey Youn recently launched local nonprofit Music4Harmony. Born out of their shared passion for music, the four young musicians started by forming a quartet when they were in elementary school and began volunteering to play at children’s hospitals and retirement centers.

“We believe that music should be shared with everyone, so we hope to reach out to more underserved communities who might not have great accessibility to music,” said co-founder and Executive Director Claire Youn. “We also hope to strengthen the ties with the community. We aim to do these things by organizing free concerts, events, and outreach programs, which can help bring everyone together.”

The inspiration behind Music4Harmony really came to life during the pandemic shutdown. The team wanted to find a way to bring comfort and hope to others during a time of isolation and uncertainty. The group began working on music projects online, such as the “Meditation de Thais - Quarantine Project.” The response to this effort was so positive that it encouraged them to keep going and launch another large project two months after the Russian-Ukraine war began - a benefit concert to support Ukrainian children through UNICEF.

“Thanks to the collective effort of the community, the concert was a success and many generous donations were made,” said Claire. “Something we will never forget was when a couple from Ukraine approached us after the concert. They shared how our music had provided solace to their souls during such challenging times, and their heartfelt gratitude touched us deeply. This experience made us realize just how powerful music is and how much people are willing to offer help when awareness is raised. We wanted to find a way where we could reach and involve more people, giving rise to the official non-profit organization, Music4Harmony.”

The founding of a nonprofit is a major milestone for anyone to achieve, but especially for four young individuals. When asked how it feels to officially have reached this milestone at such a young age, the team had this to say:

Claire Youn, Executive Director and Co-Founder: “The journey of establishing a nonprofit music organization has been challenging, but seeing how we can help others through our talents has made it fulfilling and all the more worthwhile. Knowing that our hard work and dedication are making a difference in the lives of others is an incredible feeling.”

Katie Liu, Music Director and Co-Founder: “Having a nonprofit music organization gives us a sense of responsibility to give back to the community. It’s heartwarming to see the smiles on people’s faces when they experience the power of music, and that motivates us to continue our efforts.”

Hailey Youn, Manager: “It feels fulfilling to officially have a non-profit music organization. Knowing that our passion for music is now channeled into a purposeful cause brings me a sense of accomplishment.”

Ellie Liu, Associate Manager: “We are grateful for the opportunity to use our love for music to create a positive change in our community. It’s amazing to witness the impact of our initiatives and see how music can bring people together and uplift spirits.”

Music4Harmony continues their good work this Summer by hosting more concerts, Instrument Petting Zoo Programs, and Summer camps for children.

Activities this Summer include:

  • Free lunch + Play program, hosted by the City of Portland
  • This program has given the Music4Harmony team the chance to collaborate with other nonprofit organizations, such as SoundsTruck NW, which is known for its mobile stage and provided them the ability and opportunity to bring live ensemble music to several different sites throughout the city, where kids are welcomed to come to share a meal together and enjoy time outside.

  • Instrument Petting Zoo
  • The four musicians will be hosting a music concert and an instrument petting zoo at the Bethany Library Annex on Saturday, September 23, from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM. The instrument petting zoo includes violins, violas, and cellos, giving children of all ages the opportunity to learn more about string instruments through hands-on experience.

  • Summer Music Camp
  • Music4Harmony is offering two free summer camps for children ages 7 to 10 years old who are interested in learning more about string instruments, through which they hope to inspire them and encourage their first steps on their musical journeys.

“We wish to build a sustainable organization that can continuously grow its impact,” said Claire Youn. “This isn’t possible without the support from donors, partners, and volunteers to ensure the longevity of Music4Harmony and its ability to achieve its goals, so all donations are greatly appreciated and will be entirely dedicated to making positive impacts through music!”
