Portland Youth Philharmonic’s Conservatory ensembles close their season with a performance of one of the most iconic orchestral works in the repertoire: Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, orchestrated by Maurice Ravel. Originally composed for solo piano, Pictures at an Exhibition takes listeners through a vivid musical gallery, with each movement inspired by a different painting or sketch by the artist Viktor Hartmann. From the eerie trudge of “The Gnome” to the towering majesty of “The Great Gate of Kiev,” the suite challenges young musicians to bring to life a wide range of moods, characters, and colors.
Performed by PYCO, this work serves as both a milestone and celebration, showcasing the ensemble’s growth and versatility throughout the season.
Also featuring PYWE and PYSE. Descriptions coming soon!
