ALUMNI UPDATE: ANOMIE BELLE CAMPBELL

Posted on February 28, 2020

(PREP ORCHESTRA 1994 - 1996)

When I was in the prep orchestra, my name was Toby Campbell. I took on the name Anomie Belle first as an artist moniker, and later, after a decade of going by the name, I decided to change my legal name to Anomie Belle Campbell.

I identify as a queer, feminist composer, producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist and classical violinist. My music is a hybrid of detailed, ambient electronic production, cinematic composition and songwriting. I always loved sitting within the layers of an orchestra growing up, and I think my recordings still reflect that. I have produced five solo albums and compose music for film, television, live dance and video games (Xbox, MTV, Showtime, Sean Dorsey Dance).

I am passionate about encouraging young women and gender non-conforming youth to develop themselves as composers, audio engineers and music producers. I teach workshops in film composition, electronic music production, media literacy and audio engineering at multiple affiliates of the Girls Rock Camp alliance and other feminist arts organizations. My work has been funded by many institutions, including Seattle’s Office of Arts and Cultural Affairs, 4Culture, Artist Trust and the Simpson Center for the Humanities.

Check out my website at anomiebelle.com.

I also work as a grant writer for nwgrants.org.
