ABOUT KATIE
Katie Liu, 14, is a freshman at St. Mary’s Academy. She began playing the violin at age 5 under Sarah Roth, and now studies with Hae-Jin Kim, while also taking piano lessons with Leslie Chen.
Katie has had the privilege of participating in master classes with Mr. Simon Fischer, the Calder Quartet, and Dara Morales with PIMF. Recently, Katie was selected as the winner of the Portland Youth Philharmonic 2021 Concerto Competition, and the 2021 MetroArts Young Artists Debut Concerto Competition. She received Honorable Mention in the state-level MTNA Junior Piano Competition in 2020, and placed second at the Oregon Mozart Players Young Soloist Junior Competition in 2019. Katie has also won awards at the Great Composers Competition, the Grand Metropolitan International Music Competition, and the American Protege International Competition.
Katie enjoys playing music with friends. She has been a member of the Portland Youth Philharmonic Organization for 5 years, where she currently serves as co-concertmaster. She also participates in the PYP Camerata Chamber Orchestra, the St. Mary’s Academy Orchestra, and the OMEA High School All State Symphony Orchestra.
Katie loves the experience both of playing music and the opportunities that it has provided her, and she hopes that she can bring the same experience to other young musicians by mentoring for PYP’s Young String Ensemble.
