Spring Concert Soloist Annie Zhang

Cellist Annie Zhang is the winner of the 2016-17 PYP Concerto Competition. She will present Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto in E minor at PYP’s Spring Concert on Sunday, May 7, 2017.

Annie Zhang is a freshman at Southridge High School in Beaverton. She has been studying cello for 8 years and is a student of Marilyn de Oliveira, the assistant principal cellist of the Oregon Symphony. This is Annie’s seventh season with the Portland Youth Philharmonic and she is now in her second season as co-principal cellist.

Annie attended the Indiana University Summer String Academy with artistic merit award in 2015, and she will be attending the National Symphony Orchestra Summer Music Institute in June 2017 with full scholarship. Annie has performed solo and chamber music in masterclasses with Monica Huggett, Alban Gerhardt, Jeff Zeigler, Ida Kavafian, Steven Tenenbom, and Miro Quartet.

Annie played a solo with the Oregon Ballet Theatre Orchestra as a winner in the Metro Arts Young Artists Concerto Competition in 2015. Her other competition awards include the Portland Youth Philharmonic Soloist Competition in 2015, the Vancouver Symphony Young Artists Competition in 2015, and the highest prize (Charlene Memorial Scholarship for student with most potential) in the Oregon Cello Society scholarship competition in 2014. This is Annie’s second appearance as a soloist with the Portland Youth Philharmonic. Annie enjoys singing, playing the guitar, composing electronic music, and hanging out with friends.
