Joshua Ji, Winner of the 2019 Portland Piano International / SOLO Piano Concerto Competition

Congratulations to Joshua Ji on winning the 2019 Portland Piano International / SOLO Piano Concerto Competition, presented in partnership with Portland Youth Philharmonic. As part of his prize, Joshua will perform George Gershwin’s Piano Concerto with PYP on the orchestra’s upcoming tour to Corvallis and their 96th Season opener on Saturday, November 9, 2019, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall.

Joshua is a sophomore at Sunset High School. He began studying piano at age 4, and currently studies with Kelli Stephens. Joshua has won numerous competitions, such as the 2017 MetroArts Young Artists Debut! Competition Mary Tooze Memorial Scholarship and 3rd in the 2018 OMTA Piano Scholarships Cris Tapang Memorial. He was also a medalist in the 2019 Vancouver Symphony 25th Annual Young Artists Competition. Joshua attended the 2014 & 2015 Portland Summer Ensembles, as well as the 2018 Indiana University Jacobs School of Music Piano Academy. He has also accompanied the annual Rising Stars Ballet Concerts since 2016.

Besides piano, Joshua enjoys photography and good jokes.

  • 1. Very informative. It’s like how we teach piano vs how we learn guitar. i.e. piano is a theory first, playing music comes later. Guitar, you learn 3 chords and you can make music right away. I’m pulling my son out of his piano lessons because I need a different approach for him
