A Portland Tradition Since 1961, PYP Presents 56th Annual Concert-at-Christmas
PORTLAND, OR – It’s not just a youth orchestra, it’s PYP! Portland’s locally-grown ensemble since 1924 presents its 56th annual Concert-at-Christmas on Tuesday, December 26, 2017 at 7:30 PM in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Music lovers of all ages are invited to unwind after the holidays with PYP’s annual family reunion.
“Concert-at-Christmas has been a Portland tradition for over 50 years,” says Musical Director David Hattner. “It has grown into a major event for our young musicians and, of course, our alumni. Audiences get a chance to see how PYP musicians grow as they progress through the organization, and also experience accomplished alumni returning to form an orchestra with just a few days of rehearsal.”
In a mostly-Spanish-themed evening (with a little Jurassic Park thrown in for fun), each of PYP’s four ensembles, takes a turn on the Schnitzer stage; the overflowing talent is inspiring for all ages. This fun-for- the-whole-family concert features performances by the Portland Youth Philharmonic, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, Portland Youth Conservatory Orchestra, Young String Ensemble, and an Alumni Orchestra. The popular event showcases Portland Youth Philharmonic’s entire roster of over 300 musicians, as well as nearly 100 alumni, drawing from the organization’s 94 years.
Highlights include John Williams’ Theme from Jurassic Park, Enrique Granados’ Intermezzo from Goyescas, Isaac Albéniz’ Fête dieu à Seville, and Manuel De Falla’s Suite No. 2 from The Three-Cornered Hat.
Concert-at-Christmas tickets range from $5 to $60, and are on sale now on the PYP website. Students of any age can attend any PYP performance for just $5.
