National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Jane Chu has approved more than $82 million to fund local arts projects across the country in the NEA’s second major funding announcement for fiscal year 2017. Included in this announcement is an Art Works award of $10,000 to Portland Youth Philharmonic to support a Creative Heights Initiative project—a collaborative performance of Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light, an oratorio featuring choirs and chamber orchestra to accompany The Passion of Joan of Arc, Carl Dreyer’s 1928 silent film classic. The NEA received 1,728 Art Works applications and Portland Youth Philharmonic will receive one of 1,029 grants awarded.
“The arts reflect the vision, energy, and talent of America’s artists and arts organizations,” said NEA Chairman Jane Chu. “The National Endowment for the Arts is proud to support organizations such as Portland Youth Philharmonic, in serving their communities by providing excellent and accessible arts experiences.”
PYP’s Voices of Light performance will feature Camerata PYP, chamber orchestra, in collaboration with Northwest Film Center, four professional soloists, In Mulieribus women’s choir, and Portland State University’s chamber, women’s and men’s choirs. Voices of Light is a 1994 musical composition by Richard Einhorn created to present with Carl Dreyer’s silent film masterwork The Passion of Joan of Arc. All Classical Portland is an additional collaborator and media sponsor. The music will be conducted by David Hattner, Musical Director of Portland Youth Philharmonic and the film will be shown in 35 mm projection.
