Portland Youth Philharmonic announces astonishing 96th season at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall

PORTLAND, OR – Since 1924, Portland Youth Philharmonic has been committed to inspiring young musicians throughout Oregon and Southwest Washington, while also providing the highest quality music education possible. The orchestra has a long tradition of excellence in education and performance dating back to its first concert in 1925.

“PYP performances are high quality, uplifting and delightful, but are much less expensive than regular symphony shows,” shares a concert-goer on the orchestra’s website. “It is so fun to see a large group of young musicians performing at a very high level of excellence.”

For its 96th season, PYP and conductor David Hattner return to the historic Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with four exciting performances. The season kicks off on Saturday, November 9, 2019, with American composer George Gershwin’s expressive, jazz-inspired Piano Concerto, performed by 14-year-old Sunset High School sophomore Joshua Ji, winner of the 2019 Portland Piano International / SOLO Piano Concerto Competition. The orchestra will also present Amy Beach’s Gaelic Symphony, the first major orchestral work composed and published by an American woman (1894), and the pulsating Batuque (1941), based on an Afro-Brazilian dance from an earlier opera by Brazilian composer Oscar Lorenzo Fernández.

“A PYP concert features the brightest young musicians in our community. It’s an evening of witnessing incredible talent combined with dedication and hard work,” shares another concert attendee.
