PYP Announces Astonishing 94th Concert Season for 2017-18
Portland’s locally-grown orchestra celebrates its 94th season with five exhilarating performances in the historic Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. Astonishing audiences since 1924, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s exceptional musicians and Musical Director David Hattner invite audiences of all ages to experience live symphonic music like never before, performed by the orchestra the Chicago Tribune called “brilliant in all departments!”
“This season we hope to see faces in the audience who have never attended an orchestral concert before,” says Hattner. “We welcome local residents, especially those who are not sure they are ‘invited,’ to get to know this unique orchestra made up of members of our community, performers who were born and raised in the Pacific Northwest.”
PYP will kick off the season on Saturday, November 11, 2017, with Beethoven’s 5th. This performance will also feature Antonín Dvořák’s Hussite Overture and Frédéric Chopin’s second piano concerto, performed by Natalie Tan, winner of PYP’s 2016-17 Piano Concerto Competition.
All four PYP ensembles and an alumni orchestra will take the Schnitzer stage on Tuesday, December 26, 2016, for Concert-at-Christmas, PYP’s joyous, annual family reunion. On Friday, January 26, 2018, in partnership with the Northwest Film Center, PYP will screen Carl Dreyer’s iconic silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc, accompanied by a live performance of Richard Einhorn’s oratorio Voices of Light.
In a Russian program spanning two centuries, PYP will perform Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s rich, vibrant Symphony No. 4 on Saturday, March 3, 2018. Pictures at an Exhibition will cap off PYP’s 94th season on Sunday, May 6, 2018, with the return of former Musical Director Huw Edwards to conduct two English works, and the celebration of David Hattner’s 10th year conducting PYP, Edwards and Hattner will perform Gerald Finzi’s Clarinet Concerto together.
Season 94 tickets are on sale now and range from $5-60. Tickets can be purchased online at any time by clicking here.
