Portland Youth Philharmonic celebrates 1 million views on YouTube
PORTLAND, OR – Portland Youth Philharmonic’s popular YouTube channel has now received over a million views on the video-sharing website! The 95-year-old youth orchestra’s collection of videos includes live concert recordings, instrument demos of well-known pieces arranged by PYP musicians, as well as interviews with musicians, alumni, and more.
Launched in May 2008, PYP’s YouTube channel has become a hub for the orchestra’s concert videos and free live streams of their performances, attracting viewers of all ages from around the world. The most popular video, titled Introduction to the Instruments of the Orchestra, was upload in July 2015, and has since received over 304,500 views. Other popular videos include Leroy Anderson’s Plink, Plank, Plunk with over 219,000 views, Norman Leyden’s Serenade for String Orchestra with over 120,000 views, and a 2012 performance of Jacques Offenbach’s Overture to La Belle Hélène by PYP’s alumni orchestra, viewed over 103,700 times.
“When I first heard PYP’s Wind Ensemble, I remember I was immediately shocked because they sounded really good,” shares 15-year-old Woodburn Arts and Communications Academy student Nicohlas Pajela in a recent video. Nicohlas currently plays trumpet in both PYP’s Conservatory Orchestra and Wind Ensemble, and has been with the organization since 2017. “I thought to myself ‘Maybe if I practice more, I could actually do what they’re doing, too.’” And two years later, his dreams are coming true.
Portland Youth Philharmonic is accepting musician applications for the 2019-2020. Brass, woodwinds and percussion are especially encouraged to apply. Financial aid and tuition assistance are available. Auditions are held each June and August at the PYP office (9320 SW Barbur Blvd., Suite 140 Portland, OR 97219). Auditions last about 10 minutes and are only heard by PYP’s conducting staff.
