PORTLAND YOUTH PHILHARMONIC FEATURES COMPETITION WINNERS IN CAMERATA PYP CONCERT ORCHESTRA TO PERFORM ITALIAN CONCERTOS AND TCHAIKOVSKY SERENADE

Posted on December 30, 2021

PORTLAND, OR – Camerata PYP, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s advanced chamber orchestra, will welcome 2022 with performances on January 7 at 7:30 PM. They will perform under the leadership of Musical Director, David Hattner, at Rise Church in Tigard, OR. This event will also be livestreamed.

This concert features oboe soloist, Ben Price, a senior at Grant High School, in Antonio Pasculli’s Concerto sopra motivi dell’opera ‘La favorita’ di Donizetti, and bass soloist, Maggie Carter, a home-educated sophomore, in the first movement of Giovanni Bottesini’s Double Bass Concerto No. 2 in B minor. The two young musicians are PYP’s Concerto Competition 2021 Co-Runner-Ups. Learn more about Carter and Price at portlandyouthphil.org.

“My favorite part of the concerto is how Pasculli uses the oboe as a very melodic and legato instrument, and yet also writes very virtuosic passages,” Price said.

The program also includes Serenade for String Orchestra, Op. 48 by iconic composer, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, who is famously known for scoring The Nutcracker. “In the serenade, he utilized his skills and knowledge from his time in the theater to create a work which has moved and delighted audiences since its premiere,” Hattner stated.

“For this Camerata concert, I hope the audience enjoys our selection of Italian concertos and dramatic Russian evening music,” Price continued.

Camerata PYP explores an extraordinary range of repertoire at the first in-person concert of the new year. We hope you will join us as we continue to come together to be inspired by the talent and commitment of PYP’s young musicians, as we have done since the first performance in 1925.

PYP is a member of the Portland Performing Arts Vaccine Coalition. To attend the performance, PYP requires proof of full vaccination against COVID-19 or a negative COVID-19 test, within 72 hours of the event. At-home tests are accepted at this performance. All people ages 5 and up will also be required to wear masks over nose and mouth while inside the venue.
