Portland Youth Philharmonic moves auditions online ahead of 97th concert season
PORTLAND, OR – Portland Youth Philharmonic, the nation’s first and oldest youth orchestra, is now accepting online applications and video auditions from local, young creatives interested in playing in PYP ensembles for the organization’s 97th concert season. This year all auditions will be reviewed electronically via video submissions. The deadline to submit an audition video is Monday, August 10, 2020. Need-based financial aid is available to every musician who passes the audition.
“PYP is both welcoming and challenging,” shared a parent whose musician participated in a PYP ensemble last season. “PYP is a priceless opportunity for educational enrichment,” wrote another. “[Musicians] will take with them not only the experience of performing beautiful and challenging repertoire, but life skills that will remain with them throughout life.”
Since its founding in 1924, Portland Youth Philharmonic has provided young musicians in the greater Portland area with a challenging opportunity to explore their creativity while receiving the highest quality music education. The orchestra is searching for new aspiring young musicians who are up for a challenge. Auditioning string players must be at least 9 years old. Wind, brass, and percussion players need to have played their instrument for at least one year, and auditioning percussionists should be in 7th grade or higher. No one over 22 years of age will be auditioned.
Interested musicians should visit www.portlandyouthphil.org/auditions to submit an online application. Each application requires a $30 non-refundable fee. Once an application has been submitted, musicians may start working on their audition videos.
PYP strongly believes that great music education should be accessible to every child. They provide need-based tuition assistance, as well as financial support for private lessons, instrumental rental, concert attire, and other expenses as needed. In 2018-2019, 82 musicians (29% of enrolled musicians) received nearly $35,000 in aid.
When a musician passes their audition, they will receive an enrollment packet that includes a financial aid application form. Learn more about PYP’s tuition assistance at www.portlandyouthphil.org/financialaid.
