PORTLAND YOUTH PHILHARMONIC PRESENTS BRAHMS FOURTH SYMPHONY & 16-YEAR-OLD NATE STROTHKAMP

PORTLAND, OR – Since its founding in the 1920s, Portland Youth Philharmonic has provided young musicians with a challenging opportunity to explore their creativity while receiving the highest quality music education possible. The orchestra’s long tradition of excellence in education and inspiring performances dates back to PYP’s first concert in February 1925.
The PYP orchestra and conductor David Hattner continue their astonishing 96th season on Saturday, March 7, 2020, at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. Praised as “one of the greatest orchestral works since Beethoven” by musicologist Donald Francis Tovey, Brahms’ rich fourth symphony was the composer’s last.
This concert also features 16-year-old violin soloist Nate Strothkamp. A sophomore at Oregon Episcopal School, Nate has played the violin for 11 years. He first joined PYP’s Conservatory Orchestra in 2015. He is now the Philharmonic Orchestra’s co-concertmaster, and in December 2019 won the organization’s concerto competition.
Nate will perform Austrian-born composer Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Violin Concerto with the orchestra. “I fell in love with this piece after hearing a student recording of it on YouTube,” Nate shares. “I decided that one day I would have to play the concerto. To be honest, I did not think that day would come so soon, but I am extremely grateful for this opportunity.”
