PYP BRINGS SILENT FILM + LIVE PRODUCTION OF RICHARD EINHORN’S VOICES OF LIGHT TO PORTLAND

Portland Youth Philharmonic Brings Silent Film + Live Production of Richard Einhorn’s Voices of Light to Portland

In a landmark collaboration, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s chamber orchestra, Camerata PYP, will present Voices of Light in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Friday, January 26, 2018. The 7:30 PM performance will feature multiple local vocal artists collaborating on the title oratorio by Richard Einhorn, to accompany a screening of Carl Dreyer’s iconic 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc.

“Time and time again, for nearly a century, Portland Youth Philharmonic has delivered concerts which astounded excited audiences here in Oregon and far away,” says PYP’s Musical Director David Hattner, who will conduct the work. “Dreyer’s film is an important historical record that is still shocking and moving. Einhorn’s music, while being a relatively “new work,” requires no previous appreciation for contemporary classical music. It speaks simply and directly to everyone’s musical ear and soul.”

The film will be screened in partnership with Northwest Film Center, as part of their 34th Reel Music Festival. The production will include live performances by Camerata PYP, In Mulieribus seven-member female ensemble, three Portland State University ensembles, Chamber Choir, Vox Femina, and Man Choir, as well as celebrated vocal soloists Catherine van der Salm, Hannah Penn, Brian Tierney, and Anton Belov. All Classical Portland is the official media sponsor.
