Posted on January 10, 2018
PORTLAND, OR – Portland State University graduate Carolyn Gage’s award-winning, feminist, one-woman show, The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, is coming to Portland! The performance will introduce Boston actor Julia Reddy on Saturday, January 27, 2018, at 4:00 PM in PSU’s 75 Lincoln Hall. The play, which depicts Joan of Arc as a lesbian runaway returning to earth to tell us about her experience, is part of A Dialogue Series Event presented by PSU’s University Studies, Pan-African Commons, and the School of Music & Theater.
The Portland State University performance is part of a larger project focused on Joan of Arc. In a landmark collaboration, Portland Youth Philharmonic’s chamber orchestra, Camerata PYP, will present Voices of Light in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall on Friday, January 26. The 7:30 PM performance, conducted by PYP Musical Director David Hattner, will feature multiple local vocal artists collaborating on the title oratorio by Richard Einhorn, to accompany Carl Dreyer’s iconic 1928 silent film The Passion of Joan of Arc.
Two auxiliary activities will enhance the oratorio and film screening. To set the stage for the Voices of Light performance, PYP will live stream on Facebook a conversation with Richard Einhorn, the composer, David Hattner, the conductor, and Amy Borden, Associate Professor of Film Studies at PSU, from the All Classical Portland studio on Wednesday, January 24, at 6:00 PM. Following the Saturday afternoon performance of The Second Coming of Joan of Arc, playwright Carolyn Gage will join actor Julia Reddy for a talk-back from the stage and the PSU Alumni Association will host a reception.
The Second Coming of Joan of Arc performance is FREE for PSU students, faculty and staff, as well as for Voices of Light ticketholders. A $5 donation will be asked of all others at the door with no one turned away for lack of funds.
Voices of Light tickets start at just $5 for students of any age. Click here to purchase tickets or for more details.
