Free Family Concert | Saturday, May 11, 2019 | 2:00 PM | IRCO Community Center

PORTLAND, OR – Portland Youth Philharmonic’s youngest ensemble will perform a free concert in Northeast Portland at the Immigrant & Refugee Community Organization (IRCO) Community Center (10323 NE Glisan St, Portland, OR 97220) on Saturday, May 11, 2019, at 2:00 PM. The 41 musicians of PYP’s Young String Ensemble, conducted by the Oregon Symphony’s Assistant Principal Second Violin Inés Voglar Belgique, will present an hour-long performance for audiences of all ages. This free program is sponsored in part by the Multnomah County Cultural Coalition (MCCC), the Oregon Cultural Trust, and OnPoint Community Credit Union.

“I see how kids in music programs learn to work in teams, persevere, and develop good work habits,” Voglar Belgique recently told the website the Immigrant Story, recounting her own musical journey. “I want to support music education and teach my kiddos to be good people and have fun playing music.”

Born in Caracas, Venezuela, Voglar Belgique audition for the Oregon Symphony, winning a spot as a section violinist in 2004. Today, she is the Assistant Principal Second Violin, in addition to conducting PYP’s Young String Ensemble, teaching at Lewis & Clark College, and playing with Fear No Music.

She will lead PYP’s youngest ensemble in a free concert including works by American composer Leroy Anderson’s Plink, Plank, Plunk!, the first movement of Mozart’s Symphony No. 25, and an arrangement of Hans Zimmer’s Pirates of the Caribbean Suite. The Saturday, May 11 performance is free and open to the public. Concert goers can arrive a half hour before the event to walk through PYP’s Instrument Petting Zoo, presented by Kennedy Violins. Here they may try string instruments for themselves, and meet PYP musicians.
