Riding high on YouTube viral success, PYP to hold auditions for all ensembles in August 2018

PORTLAND, OR – Portland’s locally-grown orchestra is looking for talented young musicians to play in one of America’s top youth orchestra programs. Auditions for PYP’s five ensembles will be held at the orchestra’s offices in Southwest Portland during the last week of August 2018. Astonishing audiences since 1924, Portland Youth Philharmonic will soon be the first U.S. organization for young musicians to reach its 100th anniversary.

“When we say ‘locally-grown,’ we mean that in the most serious way,” Musical Director David Hattner told FOX 12 Oregon’s Gregory Day on the Weekly Portland Podcast in June. “This is not an organization that exists to bring in famous musicians from elsewhere and present them to the public. PYP takes youth that come from this community and raises them up to a level that they never imagined existed before they joined the organization.”

Prospective musicians and audiences can hear PYP for themselves on the orchestra’s popular YouTube channel. Boasting over 750,000 total views and more than 1,125 subscribers, the channel offers live concert performances of Beethoven’s powerful Fifth Symphony, Tchaikovsky’s rich Symphony No. 4, Butterworth’s evocative A Shropshire Lad, and much more.
