Roger Kaza, Principal Horn for the Saint Louis Symphony, will receive the Mary V. Dodge Lifetime Achievement Award at PYP’s Winter Concert on Saturday, March 4, 2017. Before accepting his award, the Portland Youth Philharmonic alumnus (1968-74) will join Portland Youth Philharmonic on stage at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall to perform Peter Schickele’s Pentangle for Horn and Orchestra.
“I can only accept this award on the basis of representing my generation of Portland Junior Symphony players, many of whom have had careers as varied and exciting as mine,” says Kaza. The Mary V. Dodge Lifetime Achievement Award recognizes the founder of Portland Youth Philharmonic. Mary V. Dodge established the orchestra as the Portland Junior Symphony in 1924. In 1978, the name was changed to Portland Youth Philharmonic.
The Winter Concert will also feature Samuel Barber’s First Essay for Orchestra, Claude Debussy’s Nuages and Fêtes from “Nocturnes,” and Hector Berlioz’s Roman Carnival Overture.
Tickets start at just $5 for students (elementary – grad school). Adult tickets start at $19, and can be purchased at the door, at www.portlandyouthphil.org, or by calling the PYP office at 503.223.5939 (Monday – Friday, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM).
